Fighting Malaria

Safia Mohamed lives in Zanzibar. She is married and has a 6 year-old daughter. Safia and her family benefited from the Geneva-based Global Fund programme to fight against malaria. Safia's daughter used to go to the hospital two to three times a year to be treated for malaria.

Since she has had a bed net, she doesn't get malaria anymore. In case she gets it again, she would have free access to medicine, which was not the case before. Now, Safia's mother uses money that would have been spent on hospital fees to buy her daughter better food. In Zanzibar, over 330'000 bed nets have been distributed to protect pregnant women and children. This has led to a significant decrease in the number of people falling sick: hospitals are reporting a 30% drop in malaria cases.

The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Malaria and Tubserculosis is a unique, public-private partnership and international financing institution dedicated to attracting and disbursing additional resources to prevent and treat HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
