The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) was established in 1965 by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) following Resolution 1086, which urged an expansion of the United Nations activities in crime prevention and criminal justice. Its mission is to advance security, serve justice and build peace in support of the rule of law and sustainable development. The Institute supports the designing and implementation of holistic and innovative modalities to confront traditional and emerging threats. The Institute works in specialized niches and selected fields of crime prevention, justice, security governance, counter-terrorism and social cohesion.
