Louis Appia, 1818–1898: Humanitarian pioneer and co-founder of the Red Cross This year marks the bicentennial of the birth of the war surgeon Louis Appia. Born in Hanau, he studied in Germany and practiced as a doctor in Geneva from 1849. He earned his place in history by issuing an appeal for help for the wounded of the war in Italy, on 13 May 1859, nine weeks before Henry Dunant.
Global Advocates for Justice and Human Rights: the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) - 60 years in Geneva! 2018 marks the 60th anniversary of the arrival of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in Geneva on the initiative of the great Swiss jurist Jean-Flavien Lalive, who was Secretary General of the Organization in 1958.
CERN opens its doors for Researchers' Night. Researchers' Night at CERN, a free and fun bilingual event, will happen this year on Friday, 28 September 2018. This is the ninth year that the world's largest particle physics laboratory has opened its doors to the public for this great European celebration of science. In 2017, it attracted more than a thousand visitors. This year, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., the event will offer even more animations to familiarize the public with its activities.
The day will be an occasion to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 25th anniversary of the creation of the OHCHR. It will be dedicated to the efforts of human rights defenders, civil society actors and everyone around the world who work to defend and promote the principles of the Declaration.

UEFA and UNOG are joining forces to organise a charity football match. "The Match for Solidarity" will involve two teams featuring former star players and will take place on Saturday 21 April 2018 at 16.00 CET at the Stade de Genève. The two teams will be managed by Carlo Ancelotti and Didier Deschamps, and will be captained by Luís Figo and Ronaldinho respectively.
Founded 12 years ago by the Geneva University Hospitals and the University of Geneva, the Geneva Health Forum (GHF) has become one of the most important European events in global health. The 7th edition of the GHF will be held from 10 to 12 April 2018 at the International Conference Center of Geneva (CICG). The forum’s central topic this year is Precision Global Health in the Digital Age, or how the digital revolution can transform the way we practice global health.
